How to Stay Productive During the Work Day

Working a full time job can often be overwhelming at various times throughout the work day, week, or year. When you read your job description you might become panicked thinking of all the responsibilities you have weighted on your shoulders. You will be faced with many challenges while working, but the end result is the most important: keeping your client happy.  Here are few tips to help you keep up with your overloaded schedule by staying productive and on task during the work day.

Create a Routine

Making an everyday routine is important to keep you working efficiently. This routine can be planned down to drinking your morning coffee, taking breaks, eating a snack, and taking a lunch. Getting into a daily routine forms healthy habits for the mind and body. Most people don’t follow a routine because they want to be spontaneous; however, that is when important jobs often get forgotten. Your personal routine is flexible. You are a human, not a robot. By keeping a routine, your overall health, mood, and productivity will increase immensely.

Write Down a To-Do List

As stated before, you are a human and not a robot. With that being said, you need to have a to-do-list or folder to ensure no projects are forgotten. Creating a to-do list is beneficial to help structure your work day and the importance of your tasks. You can make your list out in a way that works for you by writing down daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly tasks that need to be completed by a specific date. The best part of creating a list is the satisfaction of crossing off a completed task and watching your list shrink in size. To-do lists allow you to see your small accomplishments when you feel as if you haven’t completed much at all.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is adequate for your overall health and brain activity. If you aren’t drinking enough water, you are depriving your brain and body of achieving its full potential.  Staying hydrated can prevent headaches, back aches, and improve your overall mood throughout the day. The recommended intake of water is to drink half of your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 100 pounds you should be drinking 50 ounces of water each day. A helpful tip for attaining this goal is to use a cup that you know exactly how many ounces it holds and to set a goal of refilling it three to four times a day.

Move Your Body

Keep your blood flowing through your veins during the day by moving your body. Standing up, walking, or stretching will refresh your body and mind, keeping you productive and on task throughout the day. By not doing this, you are probably suffering from restlessness when going to sleep at night. Exercise and movement throughout the day will improve your sleep habits, posture, and overall function of your body.

Pack Healthy Snacks

Fueling your body with healthy snacks will leave your body with more energy and better cognitive functions. Though it is easy to fall into the trap of drinking sugary caffeinated drinks, such as a pop or creamer with a little bit of coffee, it is important to consume these in moderation. The next time you have an appetite for chips, try reaching for a pre-portioned bag of almonds. However, when you have a craving for a sweet that you can’t seem to kick, try dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. Remember it is okay to indulge every once in a while, but do your best to not let it form a habit.

Overall, staying productive can be a daunting task, but by taking the steps above you might be surprised at the increase of productivity throughout the workday. Challenge yourself to make a change to better your overall health and accomplishments each day.
