The Time & Place for Novelty Pens
Did you know there are pens that talk, light up, smell good, change colors and even have hair? These may seem too silly to represent your brand, but sometimes, promotional novelty pens are just what you need for a successful marketing campaign.
Consider your other options—novelty pens will stand out when compared to basic pens and pencils so you already have a leg up on the competition. Of course, when shopping for novelty pens it can be easy to get off brand. Always keep your brand standards and your key audience in mind. Novelty pens are made to be eye-catching. They’re pens that you just want to try or play with, but if they don’t align with your brand strategy, stay away. On the other hand, even if your brand is typically more serious or upscale, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a novelty pen appropriate for your campaign. Consider a scented pen for bakeries or a campaign encouraging people to “stop and smell the promotion.”
Don’t stretch too far, though. In every campaign and every element of every campaign, you should maintain consistent branding including the voice, tone, and values of the brand. When browsing novelty pens, put yourself in your audience's shoes. How would they react if they received this pen? Would they think it was funny or cute? Or would they wonder how it relates to your message? The last thing you want to create is confusion, but that can be a fine line to walk. It’s not necessarily bad to make someone think about what you’re trying to say either.
Custom novelty pens can be the perfect nudge for your campaign. They can match a theme better than traditional pens, really earn some attention and gain brand recognition. Just keep your brand and audience in mind, and you’ll be fine.
